Kindness is the theme of the 49th edition of "Humorists in Marostica", an international humorous graphics competition that brings together cartoonists, illustrators and graphic designers from all over the world in the Vicenza city of chess .
Promoted by the Marostice Graphic Group, since its foundation the competition aims to launch a critical message on existence using the international language of graphics, integrated with humor which also adds reflection to the smile, overcoming political barriers , linguistic and cultural. The quality of the works and the jury, freedom of thematic choices and independence from commercial strategies make it one of the most popular competitions on the international scene.
As suggested by the organizers, the theme proposed for this edition opens up to urgent and current issues. In everyday reality, kindness has now disappeared, leaving room for arrogant and aggressive language, full of insults and offences. Just think of the web, television talk shows, Facebook whose existence seems to be aimed solely at venting, protected by anonymity, the instinct of anger and resentment against someone, sometimes against everyone.
Kindness, just a few years ago, was the basis of good manners, a feeling that united the community and kept it together. In our era, however, kindness is often mistaken for ambiguity or opportunism and is interpreted as a sign of weakness and emotional fragility.
At best it is understood as good manners, but this is too reductive an interpretation. Kindness has a much more important role, it is an essential ingredient to keep people together, at any level, to not waste the wealth of human relationships we possess, to live better with ourselves and with others. As Wolfgang Goethe stated several years ago, in unsuspecting times, kindness is a "chain that holds men together".
In this sense, therefore, kindness is not weakness, it is a strength, as the famous philosopher and psychologist Piero Ferrucci writes in a famous book entitled The strength of kindness.
Marcus Aurelius, philosopher and Roman emperor, defined it as "the joy of humanity".
It therefore becomes a necessity, not a luxury, a founding pillar of human and social relationships, in the quality of our life.
The ethos of kindness is, finally, a "global" issue that lends itself to interpretation by authors from all over the world.
Once again the competition favors themes that spark reflection, always with a smile and with incisive and interpretative methods that only a wordless image can convey. Trusting that in the near future kindness will come back into fashion and that humorists can make a contribution to this new turning point!

The “Humorists in Marostica” competition is open to cartoonists, illustrators and graphic designers of all nationalities. Registration and submission of works by 31 March 2020. The works, cartoons or strips, must be strictly free of dialogue or jokes. Awards May 16, 2020. Exhibition of the works at the Lower Castle of Marostica from16 May to 14 June 2022 .
